Signs and Symptoms of Penile Cancer

Penile cancer is a cancer that originates in the tissues of the penis. The most common penile cancer is penile squamous cell carcinoma, which behaves similarly to other squamous cell carcinomas of the skin. Penile cancer is very rare in North America and Europe, accounting for less than 1% of all cancers in men. However, penile cancer is much more common in South America, Asia and Africa, where it accounts for about 10% of all cancers in men. We have put together a list of common signs and symptoms of penile cancer below.

Also, we have information on diagnosis, helpful books and valuable resources for patients.

The Signs and Symptoms of Penile Cancer include:

  • A lump on the penis
  • Redness or irritation on the penis
  • A lump on the penis
  • Pain or discharge from the penis

Infection with the human papillomavirus (HPV) may increase the chance of developing penile cancer. HPV is found in approximately half of all penile cancers.

Penile cancer is slow-growing in its early stages, and it does not affect voiding or erectile function. Hence patients may not seek medical attention until they notice pain or discharge from the penis, at which point the cancer may have already progressed from being localized to invasive.

Patients who have signs and symptoms of penile cancer often delay seeking medical attention out of embarrassment, guilt or fear. The longer penile cancer goes undiagnosed, the less likelihood of maintaining erectile function and a cosmetically sound result. Survival rates are also diminished the longer a penile cancer is undiagnosed.

Diagnosis of Penile Cancer

The best way to diagnose penile cancer is with a tissue biopsy. Every uncircumcised man who has a penile lesion should have a biopsy. There are several benign conditions that look like penile cancer, and only a biopsy can clarify the diagnosis.
