Pelvic Inflammatory Disease | PID Signs and Symptoms

Pelvic inflammatory disease is a broad term that refers to an infection of the female reproductive organs.  This may include the fallopian tubes, the ovaries and even the lining of the uterus.  PID is usually contracted through a sexually transmitted disease, although some women develop infections after childbirth, abortions or other types of pelvic surgeries.  We have put together a list of common signs and symptoms of pelvic inflammatory disease include.

The Most Common Signs and Symptoms of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease | PID include:

  • A foul-smelling discharge
  • Painful urination
  • A dull ache in the lower abdomen
  • Pelvic pain
  • Fever and chills
  • Irregular menstrual bleeding
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Fatigue
  • Diarrhea or vomiting

In some cases, pelvic inflammatory disease causes only a few symptoms, or none at all.  About a million American women are treated for pelvic inflammatory disease every year, most as a result of a sexually transmitted disease, such as chlamydia or gonorrhea.  The organism that results in PID is usually chlamydia.  Unfortunately, chlamydia infections often show no signs and symptoms.

Diagnosis of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease | PID

A diagnosis of pelvic inflammatory disease is done most often through the presenting signs and symptoms, a pelvic exam, and an analysis of vaginal discharge.  If you suspect that you have been exposed to a sexually transmitted disease, get tested right away.  Many women don’t see a doctor at the first sign of symptoms of an STD. Untreated STDs can result in pelvic inflammatory disease.  As with many infections, antibiotics are often necessary to destroy the offending bacteria.
