Signs and Symptoms of Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma

Non-Hodgkin lymphoma, also known as non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, is a cancer of the lymph nodes. In non-Hodgkin lymphoma, tumors develop from a type of white blood cell called lymphocytes. Non-Hodgkin lymphoma is more common than the other general type of lymphoma called Hodgkin’s Disease. Non-Hodgkin lymphoma can occur at any age, although the median age for diagnosis is 66 years. The Signs and Symptoms of Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma are as follows:

  • Swollen lymph glands in the neck, armpit or groin
  • Painless swelling of one or more lymph nodes that comes and goes
  • Chest pain
  • Coughing
  • Wheezing
  • Trouble breathing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Abdominal pain
  • Fluid accumulation in the abdomen
  • Abdominal swelling
  • Fatigue
  • Fever lasting for 14 days or more
  • Night sweats and chills lasting 14 days or more
  • Unexplained weight loss of 10% or more of your body weight over six months
  • Headache
  • Bone pain
  • Blocked urine flow
  • Severe itching of the skin
  • Seizures
  • Weakness

There are various types of non-Hodgkin lymphoma that are based on cell characteristics such as size, growth patterns, and aggressiveness. Sub-types include T-cell lymphoma, B-cell lymphoma and follicular lymphoma.

There are often no obvious risk factors for non-Hodgkin lymphoma. There is some correlation between exposure to certain viruses, such as hepatitis C, Epstein-Barr virus and HIV. Exposure to certain chemicals such as pesticides and insecticides may increase the risk for developing non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

Diagnosis of Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma

Tests and procedures used to diagnose non-Hodgkin lymphoma include a CT scan, an MRI or a PET scan, as well as a tissue biopsy of a lymph node.
