Nasopharyngeal Cancer Signs and Symptoms

Nasopharyngeal cancer is a cancer that originates in the nasopharynx, which is the uppermost region of the throat behind the nose. It is rare in the US, and much more common in East Asia and Africa. In the US, Asian-born immigrants have a much higher incidence of this disease than do American-born Asians. It is most often diagnosed between the ages of thirty and fifty, and is more common in males. We have listed the common signs and symptoms of nasopharyngeal cancer below.

Also, we have information on diagnosis, helpful books and valuable resources for patients.

The Signs and Symptoms of Nasopharyngeal Cancer are as follows:

In the early stages, nasopharyngeal cancer may not cause any symptoms. Symptoms of nasopharyngeal cancer include:

  • Swollen lymph nodes in the neck
  • A lump in the nose
  • A lump on the neck
  • Otitis media or ear pain
  • Difficulty hearing
  • Frequent ear infections
  • Bloody nasal discharge
  • Nasal congestion
  • Bloody saliva
  • Headaches
  • Sore throat
  • Trouble breathing or speaking

If you have any of these symptoms that do not resolve over time, such as a persistent stuffy nose, see your doctor.

Other risk factors for nasopharyngeal cancer include exposure to the Epstein-Barr virus, smoking cigarettes and drinking large amounts of alcohol.

Diagnosis of Nasopharyngeal Cancer

A diagnosis of nasopharyngeal cancer may be difficult in the early stages, when the symptoms mimic many other disorders. Nasopharyngeal cancer is usually diagnosed when it is in its later stages.

A diagnosis of nasopharyngeal cancer is made through several tests and procedures which may include a CT scan, an MRI, a PET scan, and a tissue biopsy.
