Signs and Symptoms of  Urethral Cancer

Urethral cancer is cancer that begins in the cells that line the urethra, a tube that carries the urine from the bladder to the outside of the body. In women the urethra is about 1½ inches long, and in men, 8 inches long. Urethral cancer is rare, and it is three times more common in women than in men.

There are different types of urethral cancer, and they are named after the cells in which the cancer occurs. We have put together a list of common signs and symptoms of urethral cancer below.

The Signs and Symptoms of Urethral Cancer are as follows:

  • Blood in the urine
  • Bleeding from the urethra
  • Weak, interrupted flow of urine
  • Frequent urination
  • Discharge from the urethra
  • Enlarged lymph nodes in the groin area
  • A lump or thickness in the penis
  • A lump or thickness in the perineum

In its early stages, urethral cancer may not cause any symptoms at all. The above signs and symptoms can also be indicative of many other conditions, so please see your doctor if any of the above symptoms occur.

Risk factors for urethral cancer include being age 60 or older, being a white female, having a history of bladder cancer, and having conditions that involve chronic inflammation of the urethra, such as urinary tract infections and sexually transmitted diseases.

Diagnosis of Urethral Cancer

A diagnosis of urethral cancer is often made using a cystoscopy, which is a procedure that inserts a thin tube into the urethra and bladder to check for abnormalities. If abnormalities are found, a biopsy may be done to check for signs of cancer in the tissues.
