Signs and Symptoms of Prostatitis

Prostatitis is an inflammation or chronic infection of the prostate gland.  Prostatitis is a different condition than an enlarged prostate, and unlike an enlarged prostate or BPH, it can affect men of all ages.  Prostatitis can be caused by a fungus, a virus, an acute bacterial infection, and by mycoplasma infections.  We have put together a list of common signs and symptoms of prostatitis below.

The Most Common Signs and Symptoms of Prostatitis include:

  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Pain in the lower back
  • Difficulty producing a constant flow of urine
  • Painful urination
  • Urinary frequency
  • Urinary urgency
  • Bloody urine
  • Pain in the region between the penis and the rectum
  • Impotence
  • Painful ejaculation
  • Discharge from the penis

The greatest danger of prostatitis is that it can become a chronic problem.  As with prostate enlargement, an inflamed prostate can cause bladder and kidney disorders.  If you experience any of the signs and symptoms of prostatitis, see your doctor immediately.  The signs and symptoms of prostatitis are similar to many other diseases affecting the urinary tract, some of which can have serious consequences if left untreated.

Diagnosis of Prostatitis

A diagnosis of prostatitis involves a physical exam, a digital rectal exam, and a urine test.  There are four different types of prostatitis, and diagnosing prostatitis involves ruling out other conditions with similar signs and symptoms as well as determining the type of prostatitis you have.
