Signs and Symptoms of Pneumonia

Pneumonia is an inflammatory condition of the lungs that is primarily caused by either bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites.  In rare cases, pneumonia can be caused by chemical irritants. Most cases of pneumonia are bacterial in nature, with viral cases coming in second. Fungal pneumonia and pneumonia caused by parasites is relatively rare. It is possible to have a case of mixed bacterial and viral pneumonia infection. We have put together a list of common signs and symptoms of pneumonia below.

The Signs and Symptoms of Pneumonia are as follows:

  • A productive cough
  • Fever
  • Shaking chills
  • Shortness of breath
  • Sharp or stabbing chest pain during the in-breath
  • Sweating
  • Headache
  • Muscle pain
  • Fatigue
  • Confusion, especially in the elderly
  • Lower than normal body temperature in the elderly

Since the signs and symptoms of pneumonia can be serious, please see your doctor immediately if you have any of the above symptoms, especially if you have recently had a cold or the flu. For some people, especially older adults, pneumonia can quickly become a life-threatening situation.

Pneumonia can also occur in children. In the third world, pneumonia remains a leading cause of death  in very young children, the elderly, and those with a weakened immune system.

Diagnosis of Pneumonia

A chest x-ray is often used to confirm a suspected case of pneumonia. A sample of sputum can help to determine the cause of the infection. Bacterial pneumonia is often treated with a broad-spectrum antibiotic, and viral pneumonia usually requires no treatment and resolves on its own.
