Signs and Symptoms of Myocardial Ischemic Heart Disease | Ischemia

Myocardial ischemic heart disease or  myocardial ischemia is the result of a reduced blood flow to the heart due to atherosclerotic plaques along the artery wall.  The reduced blood flow to the heart causes a reduction in the heart’s oxygen supply.  Myocardial ischemia can lead to angina, a damaged heart muscle, and abnormal heart rhythms.  We have put together a list of common signs and symptoms of myocardial ischemia below.

The Most Common Signs and Symptoms of Myocardial Ischemic Heart Disease | Ischemia include:

  • Poor circulation
  • Chest pain
  • Foot and leg pain
  • Shoulder and arm pain

Tests to help diagnose myocardial ischemia include an echocardiogram, an electrocardiogram (ECG) and blood tests for certain heart enzymes that are present if the heart has been damaged.  As well, a coronary angiography can get a detailed view of the inside of your arteries.  A stress test may be performed to evaluate the total functioning of your heart, and a portable ECG machine can be worn at home to monitor your heart rhythm and to detect silent ischemia.
