Mesothelioma Signs and Symptoms

Mesothelioma is a very rare type of cancer that occurs in the lining of the body’s major organs. The most common type of mesothelioma is plural mesothelioma, which affects the tissues that surround the lungs.  Periotoneal mesothelioma occurs in the lining surrounding the abdominal organs. We have put together a l;ist of common signs and symptoms of mesothelioma below.

Also, we have information on diagnosis, helpful books and valuable resources for patients.

The Signs and Symptoms of Mesothelioma are as follows:

The signs and symptoms of plural mesothelioma include:

  • Pain in the chest wall
  • Shortness of breath
  • Coughing
  • Wheezing
  • Unusual lumps under the skin in the chest wall
  • Fatigue

The signs and symptoms of periotoneal mesothelioma include:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Fluid build-up in the abdomen (ascites)
  • Lumps of tissue in the abdomen
  • Weight loss
  • Bowel problems

There are other types of mesothelioma, such as pericardial mesothelioma, which affects the tissue surrounding the heart. Signs and symptoms of pericardial mesothelioma include chest pain and breathing difficulties.

Diagnosis of Mesothelioma

A diagnosis of mesothelioma is often difficult, since the cancer is rare and the symptoms can mimic many other diseases. A history of exposure to asbestos increases the suspicion of mesothelioma.

Based on the presenting signs and symptoms of mesothelioma, a physician may order diagnostic tests such as x-rays, a CT scan or an MRI to examine the tissue and check for any abnormalities. A diagnosis of mesothelioma is can only be definitively made with a biopsy.
