Signs and Symptoms of Intraocular Melanoma

Intraocular melanona, also known as eye melanoma, is a rare form of cancer that begins in the tissues of the eye called the uvea. The uvea is the middle three layers of the eye. It consists of the iris (the colored part of the eye), the ciliary body (a ring of tissue with muscle fibers) and the choroids (a layer of blood vessels in the eye).  Intraocular melanoma is rare, but it is the most common type of eye cancer. We have put together a list of common signs and symptoms of intraocular melanoma below.

Also, we have information on diagnosis, helpful books and valuable resources for patients.

The Signs and Symptoms of Intraocular Melanoma are as follows:

  • Blurred vision
  • A dark spot on the iris
  • Vision changes
  • A change in the shape of the pupil

Most people do not have any signs and symptoms of intraocular melanoma. Intraocular melanoma may first be diagnosed during a routine eye exam. Intraocular melanoma in the iris may appear as a dark spot on the iris. Intraocular melanoma in the ciliary or choroid may present as blurry vision.

The risk factors for intraocular melanoma include being middle-aged, white, and having green or blue eyes. Sun tanning is another risk factor.

Diagnosis of Intraocular Melanoma

A diagnosis of intraocular melanoma is made through tests that examine they eye. An eye exam with dilated pupil is the first step in making a diagnosis of intraocular melanoma, followed by an examination of the inside of the back of the eye. An ultrasound examination of the eye may also be done.

In patients with small intraocular melanoma tumors, the tumors may be completely removed and vision can be saved. Larger tumors may require radiation therapy, laser therapy or surgery.
