Signs and Symptoms of Hypopharyngeal Cancer

Hypopharyngeal cancer is a type of head and neck cancer that is very rare. It is a cancer of the hypopharynx, which is the area where the larynx and the esophagus meet. Hypopharyngeal cancer is a type of mucosal squamous cell carcinoma, and it is common to find several tumors in the same area where the hypopharynx is located. We have put together a list of common signs and symptoms of hypopharyngeal cancer below.

Also, we have information on diagnosis, helpful books and valuable resources for patients.

The Signs and Symptoms of Hypopharyngeal Cancer are as follows:

  • Swollen lymph nodes in the neck
  • A lump in the throat
  • Painful swallowing
  • Voice changes
  • Sore throat in one area that does not go away
  • Weight loss due to difficulty swallowing food
  • Pain that radiates from the throat to the ears
  • Having Plummer-Vinson syndrome
  • Nutritional deficiencies of certain vitamins

Excessive use of tobacco, including chewing tobacco, as well as excessive use of alcohol are risk factors for hypopharyngeal cancer. Hypopharyngeal cancer is very rare, and thus it is difficult to catch the signs and symptoms of hypopharyngeal cancer in its earliest stages. Hypopharyngeal cancer occurs more often in men, and it is more common in Europe and India. Children rarely get hypopharyngeal cancer.

Diagnosis of Hypopharyngeal Cancer

A diagnosis of hypopharyngeal cancer is made through a thorough examination of the throat with an endoscope or bronchoscope. A biopsy of the area may be taken. A CT scan or an MRI can give doctors a detailed view of what is happening in that particular area.
