Signs and Symptoms of Hypoglycemia

Hypoglycemia is the clinical term for low blood sugar, which means abnormally low levels of glucose in the blood. Hypoglycemia most often results as a complication from treating diabetes with insulin or medications. Even though some people suffer symptoms of low blood sugar, such as shakiness between meals, they may or may not have lowered glucose levels. Generally, hypoglycemia is defined as a serum glucose level of under 70 mg/dL. We have listed the common signs and symptoms of hypoglycemia below.

The Common Signs and Symptoms of Hypoglycemia are:

  • Shakiness
  • Sweating
  • Pale skin
  • Heart palpitations
  • Tremors
  • Feelings of hunger
  • Anxiety
  • Feeling faint
  • Weakness
  • Dilated pupils
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Feeling of pins and needles

Be aware of the symptoms of hypoglycemia – if you ignore the signs and symptoms of hypoglycemia, you may lose consciousness.  Untreated, hypoglycemia can lead to loss of consciousness, seizures and even death. This is because the brain requires glucose to function.

Hypoglycemia signs and symptoms occur in many people, but not all people have the corresponding low blood glucose levels. This is not a dangerous condition, and it can be treated by eating regular small meals every 2 – 3 hours, and eating protein with each meal.

Diagnosis of Hypoglycemia

A diagnosis of hypoglycemia is made by fasting overnight. A sample of blood is drawn and it is analyzed in a laboratory. Another test involves raising blood glucose levels and then seeing if the signs and symptoms of hypoglycemia go away.
