Gestational Trophoblastic Tumor Signs and Symptoms

Gestational trophoblastic tumor is a rare tumor found in women of childbearing age. A gestational trophoblastic tumor can literally fake the signs and symptoms of pregnancy. There are two types of gestational trophoblastic tumors, a choriocarcinoma and a hydatiform mole. A hydatiform mole is benign, and a choriocarcinoma is malignant. We have put together a list of common signs and symptoms of gestational trophoblastic tumor below.

Also, we have information on diagnosis, helpful books and valuable resources for patients.

The Signs and Symptoms of Gestational Trophoblastic Tumor are as follows:

  • Vaginal bleeding
  • Enlarged uterus
  • Pelvic pain
  • Vomiting

A gestational trophoblastic tumor may feel like a normal pregnancy at first. A gestational trophoblastic tumor even secretes hormones related to pregnancy, such as serum hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin hormone). As a result, doctors most often suspect a normal pregnancy with complications.

A gestational trophoblastic tumor is extremely rare. The incidence of gestational trophoblastic tumpr is lower in Europe and North America, and higher in Asia and South America, possibly due to nutritional factors. A pregnancy before age sixteen or after agel 35 increases the risk of gestational trophoblastic tumor.

Diagnosis of GestationalTrophoblastic Tumor

A diagnosis of gestational trophoblastic tumor is made initially through blood tests and an ultrasound. If gestational trophoblastic tumor is suspected, a  subunit of serum hCG called beta hCG is also measured. In gestational trophoblastic tumor, beta hCG is always elevated.
