Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia Signs and Symptoms

Chronic myelogenous leukemia is a cancer of the white blood cells that starts in the bone marrow.  Chronic myelogenous leukemia is also known as chronic myeloid leukemia. Chronic leukemias develop very gradually, in contrast to acute leukemias.  Many people are asymptomatic for many years. We have put together a list of common signs and symptoms of chronic myelogenous leukemia below.

Also, we have information on diagnosis, helpful books and valuable resources for patients.

The Signs and Symptoms of Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia are as follows:

  • Enlarged spleen
  • Fatigue
  • Anemia
  • Low-grade fever
  • Increased susceptibility to infections
  • Weight loss
  • Night sweats
  • Vision problems
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Cognitive difficulties
  • Easy bruising
  • Bone pain

Chronic myelogenous leukemia occurs mainly in adults between the ages of fifty and sixty. It rarely occurs in children. Slightly more men than women are affected.  People who have had exposure to nuclear and other types of radiation are at an increased risk for developing chronic myelogenous leukemia.  Approximately eight-five percent of people who are diagnosed with chronic myelogenous leukemia are asymptomatic, and may only be experiencing mild fatigue or abdominal fullness.

Diagnosis of Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia

A diagnosis of chronic myelogenous leukemia is often the result of routine blood work. People with chronic myelogenous leukemia have a large number of white blood cells. A bone marrow biopsy may also be taken to determine the type and extent of the leukemia. Newer tests, such as genetic testing, may also be taken to confirm the diagnosis of chronic myelogenous leukemia.
