Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia Signs and Symptoms

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia is the second most common type of leukemia in adults.  Leukemia is a cancer of the white blood cells, which originate in the bone marrow. Chronic lymphocytic leukemia almost always occurs in adults, though on rare occasions it is found in teenagers and children. We have put together a list of common signs and symptoms of chronic lymphocytic leukemia below.

Also, we have information on diagnosis, helpful books and valuable resources for patients.

The Signs and Symptoms of Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia are as follows:

  • Swollen lymph nodes with no pain
  • Fever
  • Malaise
  • Weakness
  • Pain or fullness below the ribs
  • Anemia
  • Frequent infections
  • Night sweats
  • Easy bleeding

Many people with chronic lymphocytic leukemia have no signs and symptoms of the disease.  The disease is discovered during routine blood work.  Sometimes the only symptom of chronic lymphocytic leukemia is enlarged lymph nodes without a high white blood cell count.

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia is most common in middle-aged males over the age of sixty.  Other risk factors include being exposed to chemicals such as herbicides and insecticides, and being of eastern European Jewish decent.

Diagnosis of Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia

A diagnosis of chronic lymphocytic leukemia is made through tests that examine the blood, bone marrow and lymph nodes.  A complete blood count (CBC) revelas an elevated white blood cell count. A diagnosis of chronic lymphocytic leukemia is confirmed through another blood test called flow cytometry, which helps to determine whether the cause of the elevated lymphocytes is due to chronic lymphocytic leukemia, another type of blood disorder, or to infection.  Another test to assist in the diagnosis of chronic lymphocytic leukemia is a bone marrow biopsy.
