Brain Tumor or Brain Cancer Signs and Symptoms

A brain tumor is a mass of cancerous tissue found in the brain.  Primary brain tumors are tumors that begin in the brain, and secondary brain tumors are tumors that have spread to the brain from other parts of the body.  The signs and symptoms of brain tumors depend on the size of the tumor, the location of the tumor and the type of tumor.  We have put together the common signs and symptoms of a brain tumor below.

Also, we have information on diagnosis, helpful books and valuable resources for patients.

The Signs and Symptoms of a Brain Tumor are as follows:

  • Cluster headaches
  • Sudden onset of headaches
  • Headaches that grow more frequent or severe
  • Speech problems
  • Sudden numbness
  • Loss of sensation in an arm or a leg
  • Twitching
  • Seizures
  • Weakness
  • Lethargy
  • Night sweats
  • Unexplained nausea, particularly in the morning
  • Personality changes
  • Mental decline
  • Cognitive impairment
  • Behavioral impairment
  • Impaired vision
  • Double vision
  • Poor motor coordination
  • Unusual weight loss
  • Difficulty with balance
  • Difficulty walking
  • Facial paralysis
  • Impaired sense of smell
  • Impaired hearing
  • Impaired swallowing

Many brain tumors grow slowly for years, and then progress rapidly.  When the signs and symptoms of a brain tumor become apparent, either to the patient or to the people around him, is when the tumor sometimes changes from benign to malignant.  The above signs and symptoms do not definitively indicate a presence of a brain tumor.  Anyone with these signs and symptoms of a brain tumor should see a doctor as soon as possible.

Diagnosis of a Brain Tumor

A brain tumor is diagnosed through a neurological exam and imaging tests such as an MRI, CT scan or PET scan.  A biopsy can determine if a brain tumor is cancerous or benign.
