Bullous Pemphigoid Signs and Symptoms
Bullous pemphigoid is a chronic autoimmune disease of the skin. It involves the formation of large, fluid-filled blisters in the layers of the skin. Bullous pemphigoid usually manifests in adults, most commonly the elderly, although it can occur at any age. It is often localized to a small area of the body, although large areas of the body can be affected. Below, we have put together a list of common signs and symptoms of bullous pemphigoid.

The Most Common Signs and Symptoms of Bullous Pemphigoid include:
- Large, fluid-filled blisters
- Itchy rash and welts
- Blisters in the mouth
- Fluid inside the blisters is clear
- Blisters appear in creases of the body or areas of the body that flex or move
- Blisters may have a reddish ring around them
The blisters in bullous pemphigoid may range from small and mildly itchy to severe and covering large areas of the body. Some people with bullous pemphigoid also have other autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes.
Diagnosis of Bullous Pemphigoid
A diagnosis of bullous pemphigoid is based on a biopsy of the skin. A postitive test for autoantibodies points towards a diagnosis of bullous pemphigoid.
