Signs and Symptoms of Bone Cancer

Bone cancer is a very rare form of cancer that begins in a bone.  Bone cancer can begin in any bone of the body, but it most commonly begins in one of the long bones of the body, such as an arm or a leg.  Most of the time, when people have cancer in their bones, the cancer has spread from another part of the body.  True bone cancer is a cancer that begins in the cells of the bone. We have put together a common list of signs and symptoms of bone cancer below.

Also, we have information on diagnosis, helpful books and valuable resources for patients.

The Signs and Symptoms of Bone Cancer are as follows:

  • Bone pain
  • Swelling or tenderness in the area
  • Weakened bones resulting in a fracture

Many people with signs and symptoms of bone cancer experience no symptoms, except for a painless mass in the area of the cancer.

There are several types of bone cancer.  Some bone cancers are found primarily in children, and some are found mostly in adults.

Osteosarcoma is the most common malignant bone cancer, and it typically affects boys between the ages of ten and twenty-five, though it can affect older adults as well.

Chondrosarcoma is the second most common type of bone cancer, and it is most common in people over forty years of age.

Ewing’s sarcoma affects children between the ages of four and fifteen.  It is very rare in older adults.

Diagnosis of Bone Cancer

A diagnosis of bone cancer is made through a series of tests, beginning with an x-ray of the area with the signs and symptoms of bone cancer.  The appearance of a tumor on an x-ray can help determine whether the tumor is benign or malignant.  A CT scan is a more sophisticated test for determining the presence of bone cancer, as it can give an internal view of the bone.  An MRI may also be used to determine whether the bone cancer has spread to the surrounding tissue.  A biopsy of the tumor in a bone will definitively make a diagnosis of bone cancer, and what type of bone cancer you may have.
