Signs and Symptoms of Allergies

Allergies are the result of an immune response to a foreign substance such as grass, pollen, mold, animal dander, dust, feathers, insect venom, and cosmetics.  The immune system reacts to these substances as though they are dangerous by releasing a chemical called histamine.  This produces congestion in the body.  When the allergens are removed, the body returns to normal.  We have put together a list of common signs and symptoms of allergies below.

Also, we have information on diagnosis, helpful books and valuable resources for patients.

The Most Common Signs and Symptoms of Allergies include:

  • Nasal congestion
  • Itchy watery eyes
  • Itchy nose
  • Frontal headaches
  • Sneezing
  • Coughing
  • Sore throat
  • Skin eruptions
  • Fatigue
  • Fluid retention
  • Trouble sleeping

The signs and symptoms of allergies are similar to the signs and symptoms of a cold.  If the nasal discharge is clear, it is likely an allergy.

More than 60 million Americans suffer from allergies.  If the allergens are not removed from the environment, the immune system will continue to produce histamine.  The signs and symptoms of allergies appear to have a genetic component, making allergies more prevalent in certain families.  In addition, a depressed immune system will contribute to the severity of allergies.

Diagnosis of Allergies

A diagnosis of allergies is made through a detailed medical history, a skin test and a blood test.  Allergies are not dangerous unless they lead to anaphylaxis, which is a life-threatening condition that requires emergency medical attention.
