Signs and Symptoms of Acute Myeloid Leukemia

Acute myeloid leukemia is a cancer of the white blood cells. In acute myeloid leukemia, there are too many blood cells called myoblasts.  This interferes with the production of healthy blood cells.  Acute myeloid leukemia is the most common type of leukemia in older adults. We have put together a list of common signs and symptoms of acute myeloid leukemia below.

Also, we have information on diagnosis, helpful books and valuable resources for patients.

The Signs and Symptoms of Acute Myeloid Leukemia are as follows:

  • Fatigue
  • Paleness
  • Shortness of breath
  • Easy bruising
  • Fever
  • Weight loss
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Anemia
  • Easy bleeding with minor trauma
  • Frequent infections
  • Bone and joint pain
  • Bleeding under the skin

Lymph node swelling is rare in acute myeloid leukemia, as opposed to acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Acute myeloid leukemia is a fairly rare cancer, and it accounts for approximately 1.2% of cancer deaths in the United States.  The incidence of acute myeloid leukemia increases with age.  This type of cancer progresses quickly and is usually fatal within weeks or months if not treated.  Acute myeloid leukemia has several subtypes, and the prognosis depends upon the subtype.  Survival rates are 15 – 75% after five years.  Relapses are common.

Diagnosis of Acute Myeloid Leukemia

A diagnosis of acute myeloid leukemia is made through a physical examination and through blood tests.  There are usually an abnormal number of white blood cells, low red blood cells and cells called leukemic blasts with signs and symptoms of acute myeloid leukemia.  A definitive diagnosis usually requires a spinal tap for a bone marrow biopsy.
