Signs and Symptoms of Arthritis | Osteoarthritis

There are over 200 diseases that are classified under the term “arthritis”.  Most of these fall under two classifications, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.  Osteoarthritis is by far the most common, affecting forty million Americans and eighty percent of people over age fifty.  Arthritis is the number one crippling disease in America.  We have put together a list of common signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis | osteoarthritis below.

The Most Common Signs and Symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis or Osteoarthritis:

  • Morning stiffness, especially in damp weather
  • Painful joints
  • Joint swelling
  • Restricted range of motion
  • Deformity of joints in some cases
  • Joint swelling
  • Bony protusions in the middle and on the ends of fingers, which may or may not be painful
  • Pain after overuse of joints
  • Pain after long periods of inactivity

Almost everyone has some form of osteoarthritis after age sixty.  It is more common in women than in men.  Even young people can have signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis.  The signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis are associated with the breakdown of cartilage in the joints.  This can occur almost anywhere in the body, although the most common areas are the knees, hips, and spine.  The fingers, large toe and neck joints can also be affected by signs and symptoms of arthritis.

The signs and symptoms of arthritis are usually brought on by the normal wear and tear of the joints. For some people, stress aggravates arthritic pain, as does changes in weather.  Dampness and falling barometric pressure bring on the signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis.


Diagnosis of Arthritis | Osteoarthritis

A diagnosis of osteoarthritis is made through a physical examination and a description of symptoms.  Sometimes x-rays are used to determine the type and severity of arthritis.
